Marie-Agathe Simonetti is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Illinois Chicago. She received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She specializes in the arts of Vietnam, photography, and the visual culture of the French Empire. Simonetti's dissertation “Photography in Indochina: Politics, Press, and War in Saigon, Hanoi, and Paris, 1897–1954” examined photography as politics from the French, Vietnamese, and Japanese perspectives. Her research and writing have been supported by The German Center for Art History in Paris (DFK), the École française d’Extrême-Orient, and UW-Madison’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies.
