Samuel Rushing

PhD Student: Modern and Contemporary Art; History of Photography

Samuel Rushing is a first-year PhD student in art history at the University of Illinois Chicago. His research focuses on modern and contemporary art and the history of photography, principally looking at questions of agency and authorship, socially and politically, in documentary photography since 1980. He is a former recipient of the Günther Stamm Prize and his essay, "Blackness in Black and White: Sebastião Salgado and Serra Pelada," was published in the journal Athanor in 2023. Previously, he has worked as a curatorial research assistant in special collections at Bridwell Library and as a curatorial intern at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

He received a BA in art history from the University of Oklahoma in 2021 and an MA in art history from Southern Methodist University in 2023.
