MA Student Ashley Dequilla received a grant in 2024 from the National Film Preservation Foundation for the Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago. Five home movie titles by Nicholas Viernes (1902-1991) won full preservation awards, which also entails 16mm exhibition prints from Colorlab. The films are Chicago of Today (1936), Little Farmers of Reynoldsburg (1936), Reynoldsburg Pt. 2 (1937), Calumet Park (1939) and Chicago All-Stars (1939). These films have been identified as the earliest extant collection made by a Filipino documentarian in cinema history and restore the loss of cinematic memory destroyed by the events of World War 2. More information is available through UChicago News and on the National Film Preservation Foundation website. Congratulations, Ashley!
