This lecture will give an overview of the origin, argument and editorial process of The People’s Flag, Higgins’s forthcoming book. The book examines the evolution of facts, fictions and regulations about the American flag, as well as its use by politicians and activists. Higgins will also share an overview of other sabbatical projects and publications including her contributions to two exhibitions, "Computational Poetics" (exhibition, Beall Center for Art and Technology UCIrvine) and "By Alison Knowles" (BAMFA, UC Berkeley).
Hannah B Higgins is a Professor of Art in the School of Art and Art History at UIC and a founder of the interdisciplinary BA in IDEAS. Her books include Fluxus Experience (University of California Press, 2002) and The Grid Book (MIT, 2009). With Douglas Kahn, she co-edited Mainframe Experimentalism: Early Computing and the Foundations of Digital Art (University of California Press, 2012). She is currently completing The People’s Flag, expected University of Chicago Press, 2025. Higgins is co-executor of the estate of Fluxus artist and Something Else Press publisher, Dick Higgins.
