Applicants to the Department of Art History’s MA program are considered on an individual basis. In addition to the Graduate College minimum requirements, applicants must meet the following program requirements:
Baccalaureate Field: No restrictions.
Grade Point Average: At least 3.00 (A=4.00) for the final 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate study.
Optional Test: GRE general. The Department of Art History no longer requires GRE scores for applicants to the MA program.
Minimum English Competency Test Score: TOEFL 650 (paper-based); 280 (computer based); 95, with subscores of Reading 24, Listening 24, Speaking 24, and Writing 22 (iBT Internet-based), OR IELTS 7.0, with subscores of 6.5 for all four subscores
Letters of Recommendation: Three required from faculty members or others familiar with the applicant’s training, ability, and experience.
Personal Statement: Applicants must submit a short statement of purpose (2–3 pages) that should address the reasons for pursuing the MA in Art History at UIC and the relationship of this work to their professional and career objectives.
Writing Sample: Applicants must submit a sample of their written work (approximately 15 pages).
All applicants are required to upload their documents and academic credentials electronically to satisfy departmental requirements and the UIC Graduate Admission requirements.
Application Deadline: February 15th each year.

Applicants to the Department of Art History’s PhD program are considered on an individual basis. In addition to the Graduate College minimum requirements, applicants must meet the following program requirements:
Baccalaureate Field: No restrictions.
Grade Point Average: At least 3.00/4.00 in an appropriate MA from another institution; if applying with a BA, the applicant must have a 3.20 overall and a 3.50 in the major, or approval by the Graduate Program Committee.
Optional Test: GRE general. The Department of Art History no longer requires applicants to the PhD program to submit GRE scores.
Minimum English Competency Test Score: TOEFL 650 (paper-based); 95, with subscores of Reading 24, Listening 24, Speaking 24, and Writing 22 (iBT Internet-based), OR IELTS 7.0, with subscores of 6.5 for all four subscores, OR PTE-Academic 54, with subscores of Reading 51, Listening 47, Speaking 53, and Writing 56.
Letters of Recommendation: Three required, preferably from professors and others who are familiar with the applicant’s potential for serious academic work.
Personal Statement: Applicants must submit a short statement of purpose (2–3 pages) that should address the reasons for wishing to do doctoral work at UIC and the relationship of this work to their professional and career objectives.
Writing Sample: Applicants must submit a sample of their written work (approximately 25 pages).
