Mirela Tanta (PhD, 2014) Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in Romania for 2020-2021

Mirela Tanta is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Millikin University. In 2014, she earned her doctorate degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago for her dissertation titled: Propaganda or Resistance: Socialist Realism in Romania 1972-1989. Mirela Tanta was awarded a Fulbright Scholar 2020-2021 award to Romania for her research project titled: Contemporary Artistic Practices and Women’s Reproductive Rights in Romania. During fall semester 2020, she plans to teach two courses at the National University of Arts’ Faculty of Art History and Theory while also researching contemporary artistic and curatorial practices addressing women’s reproductive rights. In a country with a history of state-controlled natality, how are present-day artists and curators responding to recent initiatives to restrict women’s reproductive rights?
