In 1868, shortly after his one-man exhibition of the previous year, Manet produced two of the most fascinating and enigmatic paintings of his entire oeuvre -- the Luncheon in the Studio and The Balcony. In this lecture Michael Fried offers a reading of both paintings that at once preserves their mystery and reveals the depth and complexity of the thought that went into their creation.
Michael Fried is J. R. Herbert Boone Emeritus Professor of Humanities and the History of Art Department of Comparative Thought and Literature (formerly Humanities Center) at Johns Hopkins University.
